The UK is required by legislation to achieve “net zero” emissions by 2050, meaning that it must stop contributing to the overall amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Since 1990, greenhouse gas emissions in the UK have more than halved, primarily as a result of more renewable energy sources and less fossil fuel-based electricity. However, according to the Climate Change Committee (CCC), we will also need to alter the way we heat our houses and drive in order to meet the 2050 target.
The government will take the suggestion into consideration and respond when the time is right, according to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband.
“We owe it to current generations to seize the opportunities for energy security and lower bills, and we owe it to future generations to tackle the existential climate crisis,” he stated.
