Thailand is planning to tighten its marijuana restrictions, banning recreational use but allowing medical usage, according to statements made by the country’s health minister in an interview with Reuters.
Following Thailand’s unprecedented decision to legalize medicinal cannabis in 2018, followed by recreational use in 2022, the country has seen an increase in cannabis shops, with the market anticipated to be worth up to $1.2 billion by next year.
However, criticism has been leveled at the hasty implementation of restrictions, which were established only a week after decriminalization. In response, the government is creating a new law to efficiently oversee cannabis use, which is expected to be enacted by the end of the year.
Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew remarked that draft bill will undergo cabinet approval next month before being presented to parliament for passage. He emphasized the need for regulation to prevent the misuse of cannabis, particularly in relation to recreational use, citing concerns about its negative impact on Thai youth and the potential gateway to other drugs
