Voting for by-elections to about twenty National Assembly and provincial assembly seats ended on Sunday amid intermittent incidences of fighting between Punjabi political party workers.
In several parts of Punjab and Balochistan, cellular and internet services were suspended in order to preserve law and order throughout the election process.
Voting for the first significant by-poll, which was held in the wake of the general elections on February 8, began at 8 a.m. today and ran continuously until 5 p.m.
One day prior, the federal government said that during the April 21–22 by-elections, cellphone services would be temporarily halted in a few areas in Punjab and Balochistan.
In a statement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that the choice has been taken to safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process.
