DHAKA: Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader of Bangladesh, requested on Wednesday the return of assets that had been stolen, condemning the extent of corruption in the Sheikh Hasina government that was overthrown by a revolution last year.
After fleeing a revolution in August 2024 to neighboring India, Hasina, now 77, has refused to be extradited from Bangladesh to face allegations of mass murder.
“The theft of billions of dollars in public funds has left Bangladesh with a significant financial deficit,” Yunus stated in a statement.
“The people of Bangladesh own the money that was taken from them. In order to guarantee that justice is served, we will keep collaborating with our foreign partners,” the acting leader continued.
