Chad’s announcement that it is ending a significant defense cooperation deal with France has sparked concerns about Paris’s declining sway in the troubled Sahel region of Africa.
Abderaman Koulamallah, the foreign minister of Chad, stated that his nation needed to “assert its full sovereignty” now.
The declaration was made mere hours after Jean-Noel Barrot, Koulamallah’s French counterpart, met with Mahamat Deby, the president of Chad.
In the West’s battle against Islamist militants in the Sahel region of West Africa, Chad is an important ally.
However, Chad’s authorities ordered the removal of US troops from the country before the May presidential election, indicating a break with the country’s longstanding Western allies.
