According to official media on Tuesday, China’s average temperature for 2023 was the highest since records have been maintained. This capped a year that saw extreme weather and record-breaking temperatures.
According to scientists, the catastrophic heatwaves that ravaged large swaths of Asia, Europe, and North America last summer are getting worse due to rising global temperatures.
The average national temperature in China last year was 10.7 degrees Celsius (51.3 degrees Fahrenheit), shattering the record of 10.5 degrees established in 2021, according to official broadcaster CCTV, which quoted the National Climate Centre.
According to the article, “the temperature was higher by 0.5C-1C across most of the country.”
It went on to say that 127 national meteorological stations in China broke records for daily high temperatures throughout the course of the year.
When Beijing experienced 27 days in a succession above 35C in July, it broke a 23-year record.
More records were set during the year, including the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital on a late October day.
Experts warn that global warming brought on by greenhouse gas emissions increases the probability of extreme weather.
In 2023, China’s north experienced both record-breaking temperatures and devastating floods.
In addition, a protracted winter cold wave caused officials to issue alerts across much of the country, and record-low December temperatures were recorded in some regions.
The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service predicts that 2023 will be the warmest year ever recorded globally.
