China is upset by the US State Department’s decision to remove a statement from its website stating that Washington opposes Taiwan’s independence.
China urged the United States to “correct its mistakes” after claiming that the modification “sends a wrong… signal to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan independence.”.
The line “we do not support Taiwan independence” was removed from the department’s fact sheet on Taiwan-US relations last week as part of what it claimed was a “routine” update.
According to a US spokeswoman, the US is still dedicated to the “One China” policy, which states that the US recognizes and maintains diplomatic relations with China instead of Taiwan.
