BEIJING: According to Chinese official media, President Xi Jinping assured Nepali Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli on Tuesday that China would provide additional assistance to build the nation’s infrastructure.
After departing from the long-standing custom of new leaders visiting neighboring India for the first time, the leader of the Himalayan republic was in Beijing on Tuesday to meet with Chinese leaders, including Xi and Premier Li Qiang, in an effort to deepen infrastructure cooperation.
In an attempt to lessen Kathmandu’s long-standing dependency on New Delhi, Oli has favored Beijing while attempting to tread carefully between the two most populous countries in the world, China and India.
China was prepared to “build the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) together with high priority, and deepen practical cooperation with Nepal.”
