During their recent spacewalk outside the Tiangong space station, Chinese astronauts Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong created history by engaging in extravehicular activities (EVA) for more than nine hours.
According to authorities with China’s Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO), the mission, which is a component of China’s three-person Shenzhou 19 mission, was conducted from late Monday night until Tuesday morning.
According to Space, the Chinese astronaut pair beat the previous record of eight hours and 56 minutes that had been held by James Voss and Susan Helms of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) since March 2001.
The Shenzhou 19 mission, which docked with the Tianong station on October 29 and will remain there for six months, has reached a major milestone with the successful EVA.
