Chiquita Brands, a banana company, was sentenced to reimburse 16 relatives of victims killed by a right-wing paramilitary group it supported during Colombia's protracted civil war $38.3 million (£30 million).

The corporation has a number of similar litigation pending elsewhere in the US, but this verdict by a federal jury in Florida is the first time the company has been found guilty in any of them.
It is also a unique conclusion that holds a private US corporation accountable for violations of human rights in foreign nations.

“This ruling delivers a strong statement to businesses worldwide: making money off of violations of human rights will not go unpunished,” stated a statement from Marco Simons, the international general counsel for EarthRights and an attorney for one of the plaintiffs.

“These families stood up and prevailed after being oppressed by armed groups and corporations.”

It is also a unique conclusion that holds a private US corporation accountable for violations of human rights in foreign nations.
