For the first time, an image of our galaxy’s likely formation has been acquired by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and it has space scientists feeling very festive.
Scotland’s Astronomer Royal, Prof. Catherine Heymans, said News, “I just love the sparkle galaxy with its Christmas lights shining as it was when the Universe was just 600 million years old.”
Ten balls of variously colored stars can be seen in the picture, resembling Christmas tree ornaments dangling in space.
It contains hints about the formation of the universe and is the first time that scientists have seen groups of stars come together to form a galaxy similar to our own Milky Way.
