The United Nations warned on Wednesday that hundreds of thousands of people had to evacuate from climate disasters last year, underscoring the critical need for global early warning systems.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN’s weather and climate organization, released its annual State of the Global Climate report, which states that cyclones, droughts, wildfires, and other calamities have a significant impact on poorer nations.
According to the WMO, the International Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), which has been gathering data on the topic since 2008, provided the data used to calculate the record number of people escaping climatic disasters.
Cyclone Chido caused about 100,000 people to be displaced in Mozambique.
However, wealthier nations were also impacted; the World Health Organization cited the floods in Valencia, Spain.
