According to the police, he confessed to killing 42 women. However, the man has since fled from detention.
Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, 33, was being held at a Nairobi police station after a judge gave detectives an additional week to look into his alleged offenses before filing charges.
Khalusha and twelve other prisoners were said to have broken free early on Tuesday morning by scaling the outer wall and slicing through the wire mesh of their cells.
The director of criminal investigations, Mohamed Amin, described it as “unfortunate”.
“This was a high-value suspect who was going to face serious charges,” he continued. We are looking into the matter and will respond appropriately.
Following the discovery of ten bodies and other body parts packed in plastic sacks in Nairobi’s Kware neighborhood, Khalusha was taken into custody in July.
Journalists were informed by Khalusha’s attorney that his client was coerced into confessing while maintaining his innocence.
Next Monday is the second suspect’s court appearance. The first two were taken into custody when they were discovered in possession of some of the deceased women’s cell phones.
