After being elected in 2015, Mr. Eastwood had led the Northern Irish nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) for almost ten years.
Only eight weeks have passed since he won the Westminster seat in Foyle with a reduced majority of 4,166 votes.
His party, however, did not fare well, losing significant territory in Upper Bann and South Down.
He added, “Politics is always about the next challenge,” as he announced his resignation. My next task is to create a new Ireland that all of us can live in.
Being the MP for Derry is an honor; I adore my work, and having led the SDLP has left me eager for what lies ahead.
It is anticipated that he will continue to serve as party head until a replacement is selected and announced in time for the organization’s October annual convention.
Claire Hanna is “far and away” the greatest choice to succeed Mr. Eastwood, according to his endorsement.
It is known that SDLP representatives at Stormont have unequivocal support for Ms. Hanna, the MP for Belfast South and Mid Down since 2019.
