President-elect Donald Trump urged Republican senators to reject a bipartisan funding bill that would have kept the government financed through March, raising the possibility of a government shutdown in the United States at midnight on Saturday.
Trump called on Congress to revoke the agreement and enact a more condensed, less comprehensive version. After tech entrepreneur Elon Musk strongly criticized the bill, he intervened.
Following Trump’s criticism of the bill, Republican House Majority Leader Congressman Steve Scalise said Wednesday night that it was dead.
In order to keep federal government offices from closing starting on Saturday, Congress must approve the short-term funding package by the end of this week.
There is only 23:59 left for Republican leadership to do a complete overhaul.
