Three years ago, Barry’s Whitmore High School banned cell phones.
Speaking with News, students from the school’s student voice organization expressed their approval of the change.
“It was definitely a big shock when we came into Year 7 because we were the first year to completely have no phones,” stated Charlie.
You are able to mingle a little more. Should phones exist, you would be seated at the table absorbed on your phone, hardly interacting with others.”
“Very intimidating”.
Oscar was the only student to attend Whitmore High from his elementary school.
“My main worry was about how I would continue to communicate with my friends,” he remarked.
“I’ve made new friends, of course, but entering Year 7 made me feel really nervous because I thought, ‘I don’t know anyone, I won’t be able to talk to anyone, meaning I’ll just look a bit weird just sitting on my own.'” But I believe that was made easier by not having a phone.”
Furthermore, Maisie claims that the prohibition is “not much of a big deal”.
“Other schools are only now introducing this rule and then there’s people freaking out, not knowing what to do with themselves because they’re not allowed on their phones,” she explained.
