The 28-year-old rising sensation has won numerous country music accolades in the last two years, but she does not want to be referred to as a “country musician.”
Bryan discussed why being limited to a single musical genre annoys him in an open interview with Bruce Springsteen for Rolling Stone.
I have no desire to pursue a career in country music. Everyone refers to me by that name. He told the 20-time Grammy Award winner, “You’re the epitome of a songwriter, and I want to be one too.”
Although you are a rock musician, no one refers to you as such.
However, you are a country and independent musician as well. You are a man who embodies all of these qualities. And songwriting is just that.
He expressed similar views in an interview with The News in 2022, describing Springsteen as one of several musicians whose careers he wished to emulate. Bryan stated, “I think people understand that I’m not that,” in reference to his status as a country artist. I’d like to be in that early stage with Ed Sheeran, Springsteen, and Kings of Leon.
He also reaffirmed the importance of songwriting for career success.
