Before waning to a typical low pressure system by Monday morning, Fengal made landfall in Tamil Nadu state, India, on Saturday, bringing with it the most 24-hour rainfall recorded in 30 years to the adjacent city of Puducherry.
After Fengal passed over the island nation on Friday, delivering heavy rains that caused landslides, further fatalities were recorded in Sri Lanka.
According to Sri Lanka’s disaster management organization, over 470,000 people were seeking refuge in makeshift relief camps, and 17 people had died nationwide.
Tamil Nadu disaster management minister KKSSR Ramachandran told reporters late Saturday that the storm had caused three electrocution deaths in India.
He stated that the cyclone’s damage was otherwise not related to the cause of the deaths.
