In a statement, the 83-year-old stated that he will support the Democratic candidate since she can “never be trusted with power again” compared to her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.
Mr. Cheney has been a vocal opponent of Mr. Trump, especially during the unsuccessful bid by his daughter Liz Cheney to retain her congressional seat in Wyoming in 2022.
At the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Friday, Ms. Cheney, who declared her intention to vote for Ms. Harris on Wednesday, made her father’s support public for the first time when she spoke with Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic magazine in an onstage interview.
“Wow,” Mr. Leibovich answered, drawing applause from the crowd.
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” stated Mr. Cheney in a statement released later.
The campaign further affirmed Mr. Cheung’s sarcasm by citing an online remark made by Ms. Cheney four years prior, in which she referred to Ms. Harris as a “radical liberal”.
For the past year or so, Mr. Cheney, who was Republican President George W. Bush’s vice president from 2001 to 2009, has made few, if any, public appearances.
