‘Deeply regretful’ for the government’s inability to safeguard Grenfell victims, Sir Keir Starmer said.

Following the release of a devastating investigation into the Grenfell Tower fire, which said that ministers "failed to act" despite knowing the risk of building materials, Sir Keir Starmer expressed his "deep regret" for the British government's conduct.

A year prior to the fire, the government was “well aware” of the catastrophic threats posed by flammable cladding and insulation, according to Sir Martin Moor-Bick, the chair of the Grenfell Inquiry, whose groundbreaking report was released earlier on Wednesday.

Additionally, the investigation said that the Tenant Management Organization (TMO), which oversaw service management, and the tower’s occupants had a “toxic” relationship in addition to “systematic dishonesty” on the part of cladding and insulation businesses.

The prime minister cited Sir Martin’s findings in a statement to the Commons, which was witnessed by several members of the Grenfell community from the gallery. “The simple truth is that the deaths that occurred were all avoidable,” the prime minister said.

As the report lays out in detail, nearly every organization in charge of guaranteeing the safety of the residents of the tower failed miserably over a period of years and in a variety of ways.
