Delhi, the capital of India, has seen a sharp increase in air pollution, strangling citizens and shrouding the city in dense haze.
According to technology company IQAir, monitors recorded pollution levels of 1,500 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 15:00 IST (09:30 BST), which is 15 times the limit the World Health Organization (WHO) deems acceptable for breathing.
Authorities have already closed schools and prohibited development in the city due to the poisonous air, which has also caused disruptions to airline services.
It occurs only a few weeks after pollution readings above 1,000 were also recorded in neighboring Pakistan’s Lahore.
Experts caution that the situation in Delhi may worsen in the days ahead and that more drastic measures would be required to address the pollution issue in the city.
