A ban on prisoners getting visitors on Christmas Day has been criticized as “cruel and inhumane” by the wife of Kizza Besigye, an opposition politician in detention in Uganda.
Besigye, 68, has been accused in a military court of trying to buy weapons overseas and possessing pistols, both of which he disputes. The trial has been postponed till the following month.
According to prison officials, convicts will not be permitted visitors for seven days beginning on Christmas Eve in an effort to avert “potential security lapses.”
Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s wife and the head of the UN’s HIV and Aids organization, announced that she will camp outside the Luzira Prison on Christmas Day in order to visit her husband and feed him.
