In May, David DePape was found guilty on federal charges and sentenced to 30 years in jail, which he will now spend concurrently.
A San Francisco jury convicted DePape of kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and false confinement of an elder during the state trial. Paul Pelosi, now eighty-four, was hospitalized for six days after the incident due to a fractured skull and other injuries.
The Pelosi family said that “legal justice has been served” in a statement following the punishment.
According to the family, not a day passes since the violent break-in and cries of “where’s Nancy?” two years ago that we do not consider this terrible assault, its trauma, or the potential for other attacks.
“That political violence against elected officials or their family members will not be tolerated” is the message they hope the penalty conveys, they added.
DePape intends to appeal the decision made on Tuesday, according to his attorney.
Following the court, lawyer Adam Lipson told reporters, “This was a really tragic end to a tragic story.”
