Pakistan’s Islamabad Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to run in the February 8 legislative elections, which might lead to his return to power. This comes after the country’s Supreme Court overturned a ruling that had been in place for six years and disqualified lawmakers who were seen to be less than “honest and righteous.” However, some observers questioned the timing of the highest court’s Monday ruling, while others claimed it helped balance the power dynamics between Pakistan’s powerful military establishment and the political class. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa led the majority 6-1 decision that overturned the Supreme Court’s previous ruling that forbade anyone from participating in politics for life if they were found guilty of violating a constitutional clause requiring legislators to be morally upright. The judge stated this in the previous ruling.
