Six people are reported missing when a luxury boat sank in a tornado off the coast of Italy, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, 18, who is also missing. There has already been one confirmed death.
According to one of those in charge of the search, the British-flagged superyacht Bayesian is still mostly intact on the seabed, but it is impossible to reach due to its 50 meters below the surface and the very short window of time that divers have to conduct their search.
Two of the divers will be cave divers, who are accustomed to maneuvering in confined spaces.
‘We didn’t anticipate it’: the most recent Superyacht.
A maximum of 12 minutes can be spent underwater, two of which are required for up and down, according to emergency responder Luca Cari, who spoke to the Italian daily Giornale Di Sicilia.
“So the real time to be able to carry out the search is 10 minutes per dive.”
After climbing a ladder to enter the lounge, divers are currently attempting to locate the best way to enter the remaining portion of the vessel.
Mr. Cari described how the divers found a glass window in the Bayesian that they could enter, but that it would need to be taken out before they could do so. Because the window is 3 cm thick, removal is challenging.
