In an interview published on Thursday, former world number one Novak Djokovic told GQ that the meals he had while in custody during his 2022 Australian Open visa ordeal “poisoned” him.
After days of turmoil over Australia’s COVID-19 entry restrictions and his unvaccinated status, the Serbian 24-time major winner had his visa revoked ahead of the tournament and was held in a Melbourne hotel with asylum-seekers.
Djokovic, who is renowned for closely monitoring his diet, stated, “I realized that in that hotel in Melbourne I was fed with some food that poisoned me.”
“When I returned to Serbia, I made several findings. I was found to have a very high level of heavy metal, but I never disclosed this to anyone in public.
