At least five people were killed when one of the dozen or more tornadoes that Hurricane Milton unleashed tore through this impoverished neighborhood in south Florida. In the US state, at least 16 deaths are documented to have occurred.
Although grateful to be alive, Crystal is unsure about what to do next.
“My attic door suddenly flew off, and everything in my house began flying around,” Ms. Coleman said to News on Thursday.
“We were terrified and it was heartbreaking. Our home had the impression of being inside a tornado.”
As Milton tore over the state, causing extensive damage and millions of people without power, her neighborhood was one of many that it hit hard.
The tornadoes began to form on Wednesday night as Milton got closer to the state; according to forecasters, this occasionally happens after tropical weather.
Crystal’s windows were blown out and pieces of her roof were ripped off. On Thursday, employees of a nonprofit organization were distributing hundreds of hot meals further up the street. There’s no flowing water and no power. A warm meal, a friendly smile, and a helping hand are appreciated by many.
