According to a local official who spoke to the Reuters news agency, the car, which was driving through Sidama state on Sunday, crashed into the river after missing a bridge.
Many of the people had attended a wedding party, according to Wosenyeleh Simion.
According to the local traffic police, the event was probably caused by the truck being overloaded, Mr. Simion stated. Investigations are ongoing.
According to the Sidama Police Commission Traffic Prevention and Control Directorate, three women and 68 men were among the known fatalities.
