The National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management (INGD) of northern Mozambique has reported that “one of the most intense storms ever recorded” has killed at least 34 people.
Cyclone Chido devastated the Indian Ocean enclave of Mayotte before making landfall in Mozambique on Sunday.
In Mayotte, a French overseas territory, hundreds are believed dead, and a number of individuals, including more than 200 Red Cross volunteers, are believed missing.
The Mozambican scenario has been described as “heart-breaking” by the INGD, which also cautioned that the death toll is expected to increase.
Northern provinces that are frequently hit by cyclones were hit by Chido. Islamist extremists are also attacking the region.
Before moving farther inland to Niassa, the cyclone made landfall in Cabo Delgado.
