The first social supermarket in the UK, Community Shop, hosted Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, at their Lambeth location on Thursday.
The Duchess witnessed Community Shop’s groundbreaking efforts to address the underlying causes of food insecurity by giving its members a hand up rather than a handout while she was there.
While working at the store, Sophie took part in neighborhood events, assisted in serving the store’s “Feast Day,” and spoke with the staff while touring the location.
She was shown the Community Store, Community Hub, and Community Kitchen—three interrelated areas of the website. Members can gain much-needed access to significantly priced food and necessities, such as bread, fruit, and vegetables, for just 20p at community stores.
The Community Kitchen is a café that facilitates social interaction and education.
