The Labour MP is well-known for giving out a list of all the women killed by men in the UK on International Women’s Day in parliament each year. She has been a prominent advocate for the issue.
Under Sir Keir Starmer, Ms. Phillips served as the shadow minister for domestic abuse and protection from 2020 until 2023. However, in November of that year, she resigned due to the party’s position on the Middle East conflict.
She was one of 56 Labour MPs who supported an SNP resolution demanding an urgent ceasefire in the Middle East, eight of whom were front-benchers.
Because of her defiance of the Labour whip, Ms. Phillips was forced to resign.
She has additionally been featured in the News podcast Electoral Dysfunction, where she co-starred with political reporter Beth Rigby and Baroness Ruth Davidson, the former leader of the Scottish Conservatives.
The portfolio for her new position will be comparable to her previous one.
In the general election held last week, Ms. Phillips barely made it back to the Commons, with her majority falling from 10,659 to 693.
Jody McIntyre, who is running for her Birmingham Yardley seat on behalf of George Galloway’s Workers Party of Britain, came in second.
