LAHORE: Following the discovery that AIDS had spread among patients receiving dialysis, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited Nishtar Hospital in Multan and took decisive action.
Consequently, a number of doctors, the chief nurse, and the medical superintendent (MS) were suspended for their involvement in the issue.
Maryam was informed of the concerning circumstances during the visit. According to reports, AIDS and hepatitis tests were not performed on a regular basis, as required every three months, since standard operating procedures (SOPs) were not followed.
Furthermore, AIDS testing had been conducted in private laboratories against procedure, and hospital personnel, including ward doctors, tried to conceal the fact that certain patients had been confirmed to have AIDS.
