Meta In a contentious United States Senate Judiciary hearing on Wednesday on Capitol Hill, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg expressed regret to the families of children who had been hurt by their use of social media.
The apology was given during Zuckerberg’s testimony at the hearing on child sexual exploitation on the internet. Zuckerberg’s company runs the social media sites Facebook and Instagram.
A video featuring kids talking about their experiences with online abuse, bullying, and other issues was shown during the hearing, which was also attended by CEOs from Discord, Snapchat, X, and TikTok, according to CBS News.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told Zuckerberg that he had “blood on his hands” from a “product that’s killing people,” while Committee Chair Dick Durbin criticized the platforms for failing to protect youngsters.
Families attended the hearing as well; some had signs with the stories of their children on them.
The tech billionaire spoke directly to the families present when Republican Senator Josh Hawley asked him if he would like to offer his condolences to those who had been injured by his product.
