Less than a week after taking office as prime minister, Sir Keir is in Washington, DC, for a meeting commemorating the formation of NATO 75 years ago, along with other world leaders.
After Russia launched strikes on Ukrainian cities on Monday, including one that targeted a children’s hospital in Kyiv, the focus is anticipated to be on assuring Ukraine of the alliance’s backing.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine is among the leaders of NATO allies present at the conference.
During his meeting with the head of Ukraine, Sir Keir stated that although there had been a “change of government,” the UK’s backing for the war against Russia had not changed.
Less than 48 hours after the election, his defense secretary visited Ukraine, which is why they are meeting.
According to Sir Keir, the summit has made it possible for a number of meetings that would often take months to plan to take place during the first week of his premiership.
David Lammy, the foreign secretary, and John Healey, the defense secretary, have joined Sir Keir in Washington, together with Nick Thomas-Symonds, who was appointed minister for European relations.
