ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided Monday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) is ineligible for reserved seats for women and minorities, dealing a severe blow to the already troubled party.
The commission’s five-member bench, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, issued the split ruling with a 4-1 majority.
ECP Punjab member Hassan Bharwana disagreed with the majority ruling, which was reserved on February 28. The remaining 77 reserved seats will be allocated to other political parties.
