El Salvador has volunteered to detain, in its mega-jail, offenders deported from the United States, including those who are citizens of the United States.
Following US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s meeting with Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele during his trip to the Central American country, the agreement was made public.
Bukele claimed to have given the US “the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system.” His tough-on-gangs stance has garnered him praise from voters but has drawn harsh criticism from human rights organizations.
Rubio stated that “no country’s ever made an offer of friendship such as this” and that the US was “profoundly grateful” to Bukele.
“He’s offered to house dangerous American criminals in custody in our country in his jails,” Rubio told reporters.
