TikTok has released further information about its disinformation-fighting tactics ahead of the US presidential election in 2024.
Additionally, according to Engadget, the company’s 2024 efforts will be quite similar to its previous ones, much like those of many of its peers in the social media arena.
To begin with, the company is releasing an in-app election guide that will point users to resources about voting, like voter registration forms and mail-in voting instructions.
Although the election guide will be similar to past years’ guides, it is being released earlier than in previous elections by the corporation (the resources for the 2020 and 2022 elections were released considerably closer to the contests than this year’s, which falls around the beginning of the presidential primary).
In 2024, TikTok will still handle incorrect information in a manner that is mainly similar to 2022. Political ads will still not be accepted by the company, even if they take the shape of producer-branded content.
It will also keep working with fact-checking organizations to determine which content can be recommended or should be flagged as “unverified.”
The company says that it will “expand media literacy resources to these labels” later this year, though it’s unclear exactly what that will entail. This might potentially make the alerts more helpful to users who encounter them.
