An Israeli strike on a tent camp housing displaced families in Gaza has killed the head of the Hamas-run police force and his deputy.
The “assassination” of Hussam Shahwan and Mahmoud Salah, who were “performing their humanitarian and national duty,” was denounced by the interior ministry administered by Hamas.
According to medics, the nocturnal attack in al-Mawasi, close to the southern city of Khan Younis, also claimed the lives of nine other individuals, including two women and three children.
Israel’s military acknowledged that it had struck Shahwan, claiming that the “terrorist” had assisted Hamas’s military wing in organizing operations against Israeli soldiers in Gaza.
Other Israeli strikes in Gaza on Thursday are said to have killed around 30 individuals.
