His family acknowledged his passing on Monday in a statement that read, “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family.”
“Daughter Lina, son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky, father Sven, girlfriend Yanisette and son Alcides, and brother Lars-Erik and wife Jumnong are the closest mourners.
In 2001, the Swede was appointed as the team’s first foreign manager and went on to teach players including David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard.
“We laughed, we cried, & we knew we were saying goodbye…,” Beckham said, sharing a video of the two of them strolling together. Thank you, Sven, for always being the kind, considerate, composed, enthusiastic, and gentlemanly person you have always been.
Although I will always be appreciative that you made me your captain, I will always cherish these final memories of our day spent together with your family.
