ISLAMABAD: Justice Qazi Faez Isa was replaced as Pakistan’s top judge on Saturday by Justice Yahya Afridi, who was sworn in as the nation’s 30th chief justice.
The newly appointed top judge was sworn in by President Asif Ali Zardari in a distinguished ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. The next CJP will hold the position for a set period of three years.
Yesterday (October 25), previous Chief Justice Isa retired and gave up his position as the top judge, and Justice Afridi took over.
The government ratified the 26th Amendment to the Constitution last week, which established new guidelines for choosing a chief justice. The top judge will be the first to be selected under these new standards.
The chiefs of the tri-services, including Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the oath-taking event.
