Days before he was scheduled to be chosen as a presidential contender, the mayor of Istanbul was arrested by Turkish police.
The secular Republican People’s Party (CHP) member Ekrem Imamoglu is regarded as one of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s most formidable political opponents.
Prosecutors labeled him a “criminal organization leader suspect” and charged him with corruption and supporting a terrorist organization.
As part of the probe, police arrested 100 persons, including journalists, businesspeople, and other politicians. The governor’s office in Istanbul has also placed limitations on the city for four days.
“The will of the people cannot be silenced” is what Imamoglu stated on the internet.
