Nearly three years ago, Adams, 64, ran for mayor of the most populous US city on a platform of reducing crime.
However, as part of numerous federal corruption investigations, he and a number of high-ranking officials in his inner circle have come under increasing scrutiny.
Though the charges are still pending, Adams, 64, would become the first mayor in the city’s history to face charges while serving in office.
In a late-night video address on Wednesday, Adams urged the people of New York to have “prayers and patience” as he vowed to fight the accusations and stay in office.
In the video, he declares, “I am innocent,” and that he would battle these injustices with all of my might and passion. He also claims that he intends to ask for a “immediate trial so New Yorkers can hear the truth.”
He also answered the barrage of calls asking him to step down.
Now, if I’m charged, a lot of people could advise me to step down as I can’t run the city and fight the CSE at the same time.
can also appreciate how worried regular New Yorkers would be that I won’t be able to perform my job while I’m being accused, even though I’ve been dealing with these lies for months.”
On Thursday, when Adams is scheduled to appear in court for the first time, federal prosecutors are anticipated to unveil the indictment, according to News.
