Following negotiations in Turkey, Ethiopia and Somalia have decided to put an end to their acrimonious spat over Addis Ababa’s intentions to construct a port in the breakaway nation of Somaliland.
The “historic agreement” was lauded by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said it would eventually guarantee landlocked Ethiopia’s access to the sea.
Both Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to respect each other’s “sovereignty” while holding hands at the news conference.
Since Ethiopia and Somaliland, which Somalia views as part of its territory, inked a maritime agreement in January, the two neighbors have been at odds.
