Concerned about the sentencing of 25 accused individuals involved in the May 9 events by a military court, the European Union (EU) stated that the verdicts were deemed to be at odds with Pakistan’s commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
“Everyone has the right to a fair and public trial in a court that is independent, impartial, and competent, as well as the right to adequate and effective legal representation in accordance with article 14 of the ICCPR,” the European External Action Service of the EU stated in a statement.
Additionally, it stated that any “judgement rendered in a criminal case shall be made public” as required by article 14.
