The FA Cup’s fifth round will mark the debut of semi-automated offside technology in English domestic football.
The Football Association made the announcement on Thursday that the technology will be utilized in the seven Premier League games that are being played at venues.
The Football Association stated that “following successful live operation in the Emirates FA Cup, the Premier League will look to implement the system later this season” .
By substituting automated technological judgments for those made by authorities, the system seeks to eliminate some aspects of human subjectivity.
Officials in the video assistance referee (VAR) room currently have to determine three crucial factors when a player scores following a near-offside incident: when the ball was kicked.
