The European Union is looking into whether Facebook and Instagram are so addictive that they are having “negative effects” on children’s “physical and mental health”
It will also look into whether they have done enough to ensure that users are of legal age to use them, as well as how content is promoted to children.
A number of major technology companies are currently being investigated for possible violations of the EU’s strict new Digital Services Act (DSA), and they might face fines of up to 6% of their annual global revenue.
Meta, which owns both sites, claims that it has “spent a decade developing more than 50 tools and policies” to protect children.
