Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who has led Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) for five years and was re-elected, has criticized the current administration, claiming that the “fake parliament” does not have the necessary support to enact a significant constitutional modification.
“We desire a new [general] election,” Fazl declared at a press conference held on Sunday in Peshawar following the end of the party’s internal poll. “This parliament does not deserve this huge constitutional amendment.”
The proposed constitutional package was pushed by the government in the midst of rumors that Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October, might get an extension. This is because the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had requested last month for an early announcement about the appointment of the country’s next top judge.
