Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has denounced the violence committed against jirga participants in Wana and Khyber.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman cautioned that using force and dismissing people will only make the situation worse in a statement pleading with the administration to pay attention to the tribes. He called on the state and administration to refrain from exacerbating the situation and referred to the violence against the tribes in Wana and Khyber as abhorrent.
He made it clear that using violence just makes movements worse rather than solving them. He promoted discussion and compromise as methods of resolving conflicts.
He went on to say that sit-ins, protests, and jirgas are characteristics of democracy and questioned the government’s overreaction.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman appealed for the injured to receive emergency medical attention and offered her condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
