Finland has decided to keep its border with Russia closed for an additional four weeks, until February 11. The prolongation was made public on Thursday by the interior ministry. On January 15, the border was scheduled to reopen. The 1,340-kilometer (832-mile) border between Finland and Russia is the northeastern flank of NATO and the external frontier of the European Union. Late last year, it closed all eight of its border posts with Russia, citing Moscow’s encouragement of unauthorized migrants and asylum seekers to enter the country. The claims have been refuted by Russia. The interior ministry released a statement stating, “Based on the information gathered by the authorities, the threat of the phenomenon restarting and expanding as previously experienced is likely.”
