Pakistan’s first high-speed rail project is now in the planning stages, with a proposal for a high-speed rail link between Lahore and Rawalpindi already submitted to the chief minister’s office in Punjab for approval.
The departments of mass transit and transportation have devised the project, which is projected to cost $1.6 billion. The documents state that trains will be able to move at up to 250 km/h thanks to the high-speed rail, cutting the distance between Lahore and Rawalpindi’s travel time to less than two hours.
The proposal highlights that, in light of the pre-feasibility study carried out by the railway department, an action plan had to be created. According to the documents, the Department of Planning and Development will provide funding for the pre-feasibility study.
